The LSI 2008 is supported by either mr_sas(7D) or mpt_sas(7D),
depending on the firmware. The default on most Supermicro boards (and
LSI HBAs in general) is "IR", or RAID-mode, firmware. This is what
mr_sas attaches to. If you re-flash the chip with "IT", or non-RAID
mode, firmware, then mpt_sas will attach. There are a couple of SKUs
that Supermicro ships that already have IT firmware in the onboard SAS
chip. The SKUs end in "-JBOD" and they use the 2308, not the 2008,
but mpt_sas is still the driver that supports it.

These are known informally to the community as the "ZFS Special". :)

Even if you opt for one of the other boards with a 2008 chip, you
should still be able to find IT firmware bundles on Supermicro's FTP
site.
