A disk fails on ZFS, you can detach it, remove it, replace it, and resilver it without any machine downtime.

Don't you have to run a single disk on these HP raids as raid0 anyway? 
That is, doesn't the controller firmware create some kind of logical 
volume on it anyway? It may be better than trusting the whole hw-raid1, 
but likely only marginally, no?
