Saw the HW-RAID term, and got concerned.  That's what, raidz2 in ZFS-ese?

As far as COMSTAR goes, there's been a nontrivial amount of work in Nexenta's public repo (illumos-nexenta), but nobody there or elsewhere has made the effort to upstream.
