I've run into a couple of situations where a VM sitting on ESXi on particular hardware was much more performant than the exact same system, bare-metal on the exact same hardware. Once I actually P2V'd a server to a temp location, loaded ESXi on the physical server, migrated the P2V'd guest back and it was crazy how much faster and stabler it was.
