Default compilation in Solaris has historically been 32 bit. Switching
to 64bit is eased if the compilation toolchain also defaults (and
perhaps only supports) 64bit so that build processes do not need to
change.

Large amounts of user-compiled software will be 32bit due to the very
long history. If OmniOS supports only 64-bit then it will be a bit of
work to re-create the installed software as 64-bit.
