You should ping illumos  (upstream) about atge.  I'm not sure which hardware you exactly have, but it's possible upstream illumos will need more atge support than what's there.

USB3 doesn't work on illumos.  You have to stick with USB2.

No.  vmadm & imgadm are SmartOS-only.
